Instill Values in your Kids

My daughter (Rudrapriya) is in her 6th grade, with her annual examinations nearing I see gearing interest from her towards books :). Yaah, she has started looking at her books and notes seriously. Last evening she came to me with a full size notebook and showed me some questions which her social studies teacher had shared with the class quoting as important questions to be read for the exam. It was told that 50% of the questions will come in from the list shared which seems to be a very common phenomenon.

I felt a bit dejected and deceived. My worry was two fold, one is by sharing the questions they are directed towards short cuts in life leading them to be become laggards in life and the other is they wouldn't respect their own hard work which they have done for the whole year. I decided to approach the situation with a lateral thought of "why" should one accept what ever is being provided? I stated the exact same thought with my daughter about expressing concern about her school's teaching habits. She understood my POV. To my astonishment, she tore the entire set of questions shared by her teacher. I could see the spirit of happiness and pride in her eyes, she seemed to be prepared for the worst but not accept a short cut. I know it is not going to be easy for her to read the entire content before the exams and am also aware that the kids who would prepare based on the questions would score "faaar" better than her but still then she would have the internal happiness of meeting the situation based on her inner strengths. Moreover I expect that her to be using her mind before accepting anything which comes her way and this is a small step towards that journey.

That very moment, I felt proud as if I had achieved something great in my life.May be this is what we should live for, instill the best of habits & values in kids to make this world much more beautiful place to live in. Be sure that these values are the ones which will be scarce, in demand and cherished for the days to come......... :)

Thanks Rudrapriya :), you have helped me hold my head high.

This travelogue is about our year end trip to places in down south starting from Chennai to Trichy, Madurai, Pillayarpatti, Sankaran Koil, Tenkasi, Srivalliputhur and Thiruparakundram. We started on Monday (23rd December 2013) morning at 7 AM (All timings in IST :-)) It was a clear day and we began our journey to Madurai via Trichy on our Maruti Ritz Zxi. Me and my family were all enthusiastic for the long drive of about 500 Kms. We decided to have our breakfast at Villupuram on NH 45. I don't exactly remember the name of the restaurant but the food was just okay, we had mini tiffin ( a combination of multiple south indian delicacies like pongal, upma, idli, mini dosa and coffee ). We by passed Trichy @ about 12 noon traversing about 300 Kms.We didn't think of getting into the city rather left towards Madurai.  Crossed Trichy, Enroute to Pillayarpatti - 1 Crossed Trichy, Enroute to Pillayarpatti -2 Enroute to Madurai, about 20 kms from Virarimalai we ...

2009 Vacation Trip - Temples Galore

Guys, This is an attempt to record my experiences about the longest drive in my life on Wagon-R . I drove along with my family (My Parents, wife and my kutty 7 year old daughter) on Friday (25-Dec-09) morning. We started at about 09:30 hrs from Chennai and decided to take the NH45 route to Trichy and it's adjoining places. At about 13:30 hrs we reached Perambalur , had lunch @ New Vasantha Bhavan. The drive was absolutely refreshing, excellent smooth road (except for those troublesome toll gates). Rudrapriya was at her best jumping on the seats for all the cheer she was having during the drive. We came to know that there is a small water falls in the vicinity of about 15 kms, decided to venture. It is named " Myil Oothu " ( near ladapuram ) on the road towards " Thuraiyur ". The drive going inroads into the small villages was a splendour. Only one car could be barely on the road at a time and if there is another one, we obviously have to step down on to the mudd...
